Parents will be delighted to know that Jongensfontein has a number of safe swimming areas. Care should, of course, always be taken, since the tides and weather-conditions can change the « safety status » of any area within minutes!

Here is a list of the most popular spots (see pics below)

FONTEINTJIE

A.k.a main beach. Right in front of the 3 Pikkewyne Supermarket this is also a natural pool, though less « tame » than the Swemgat. Here the tinies can build dams in the fountain-stream flowing toward the sea, the older kids can play in the waves of the pool and the teens and adults can « boogie » in the massive breakers behind the pool! Do take care venturing in back there, as the size of the breakers can be underestimated and many a boarder has traded stomach-skin for sea-urchin spines…

SWEMGAT

A.k.a poel or wrak or sandgat… is a natural swimming pool. During the holidays at low tide it becomes the « baby pool » where toddlers enjoy the little sun-heated pools. Out-of-season it becomes the grand-parents’ « spa »! High tide does provide some exciting swims with water gushing in from all sides, providing a whirly foam-bath, but it can become dangerous too, so always be careful.

MERMAID POOL

Behind the Swemgat to the left, you’ll have to climb over a few rocks to get there, but it is a fantastic low-tide snorkelling spot. To be negotiated at low tide ONLY!

MAJOOR SE POEL

Another « fab » spot, this tiny pool with it's narrow stretch of "tanning ground" is situated very close to Leben Sea Cottage. Perfect for toddlers at low tide and a nice&easy bathing spot for adults during high tide.

SANDSTRAND

Do take note that the lovely sandy beach to the east of Jongensfontein is not safe for swimming. If you wish to engage in some body-surfing, a ten-minute drive to Lappiesbaai (Still Bay’s main beach) is the best option.

STILBAAI BEACHES

Lappiesbaai (main beach) has long stretches of fine sand, perfect for those professional sand castles, and lovely waves for body surfing, boogie boarding, kite surfing or simply splashing around with the kids!

The harbour beach is a good alternative if you are looking for less busy, or if you want to try out your SUP in the waves.

There is also the lagoon beach for those who like to float up- or downstream with their inflatable flamingos or what-have-yous!
